BUILDING THE FUTURE: WHY WE MUST INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION TO JOIN CONSTRUCTION by Chris Haughey

The construction industry has long been a cornerstone of economic growth and community development. Yet, as an industry, we face a significant and growing challenge: attracting and retaining the next generation of talent.

The construction industry has long been a cornerstone of economic growth and community development. Yet, as an industry, we face a significant and growing challenge: attracting and retaining the next generation of talent. If we are to build not only the projects of today but also the sustainable, innovative infrastructure of tomorrow, we must do more to encourage young people to see our industry as a career of choice.

At McCoy Contractors, we firmly believe that young people are the future of our sector. Their energy, creativity and willingness to embrace new technologies bring fresh perspectives that are essential in a rapidly evolving industry. From digital construction methods to sustainability-focused practices, the skills required are changing and younger generations are uniquely positioned to lead this transformation.

However, there remains a perception gap. Too often, construction is still viewed through an outdated lens, rather than as the dynamic, skilled and rewarding career path it truly is. Addressing this perception is critical. We need to engage with schools, colleges and communities to showcase the breadth of opportunities available, from engineering and project management to environmental planning and specialist trades.

At McCoy Contractors, we are committed to investing in people from the very start of their careers. Our apprenticeship programmes are a key part of this commitment. By offering structured, hands-on training alongside experienced professionals, we provide young people with the opportunity to earn, learn and build a strong foundation for long-term success.

Apprenticeships are more than just entry points; they are pathways to fulfilling and sustainable careers. We are proud to employ apprentices across a variety of disciplines, ensuring they gain exposure to different aspects of the business. Whether it’s on-site experience, planning and design, or health and safety, we believe it is crucial that young people develop a well-rounded understanding of the industry.

Supporting their development does not stop at recruitment. Mentoring plays a vital role in helping apprentices grow in confidence and capability. By pairing them with experienced colleagues, we ensure knowledge is passed on and that each individual feels supported in their journey. This not only benefits the apprentices themselves but strengthens the entire workforce.

Crucially, we must also give young people the chance to experience the diversity of our industry. Construction is not a one-size-fits-all career; it offers a wide range of roles that can suit different skills and interests. Encouraging apprentices to explore these avenues helps them find their niche and build a career that is both rewarding and impactful.

The need to bring more young people into the industry is not simply a business necessity, it is a responsibility. As an industry, we must work collectively to create clear, accessible pathways and ensure that those entering the sector feel valued and supported.

At McCoy Contractors, we are proud of the steps we are taking, but we recognise there is always more to be done. By continuing to invest in apprenticeships, champion development and promote the opportunities within our sector, we can inspire the next generation to join us.

Ultimately, the future of construction depends on the talent we nurture today. By encouraging young people to step into our industry and supporting them every step of the way, we are creating more than just buildings, we are building a stronger, more resilient future for all.
