WHY EVERY BUSINESS NEEDS A SNAPSHOT OF PROGRESS, By Chris Haughey, McCoy Contractors
MCCOY CONTRACTORS TAKES DELIVERY OF HYDREMA 922G DUMPERS

For McCoy Contractors, the publication of our latest annual report provides an opportunity to step back and take stock. It allows us to reflect on what we have achieved over the past year, assess our progress against key objectives and, just as importantly, set out our ambitions for the future.

For us, the report is much more than a collection of financial figures. It is a snapshot of our business, our people, our projects and the values that continue to drive our growth. The latest report highlights another successful year, with turnover reaching £32 million, a workforce of 250 and the continued delivery of major earthworks, groundworks and civil engineering projects across the UK. These are achievements we are immensely proud of, but they are only part of the story.

Sustainable growth has always been a key priority for McCoy. In an industry that can often experience peaks and troughs, long-term success is built on careful planning, strong leadership and a commitment to delivering consistently for clients. Growth for growth's sake is rarely sustainable. Instead, our focus has been on structured growth that strengthens the business, develops our capabilities and creates opportunities for our people.

The annual report demonstrates how this approach continues to deliver results. Whether through investment in new plant and equipment, recruitment and training, or expanding our project portfolio, every decision is made with the long-term future of the business inmind. The report also reinforces the growing importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance within the construction sector. Increasingly, clients want to understand not only what contractors deliver, but how they deliver it.

ESG metrics provide a valuable way of measuring progress and accountability. They help businesses demonstrate their commitment to reducing environmental impact, supporting communities, investing in people and maintaining the highest standards of governance and safety. Over the past year, we have continued to make meaningful progress across all three areas. From investing in a fully electric company car fleet and implementing initiatives that reduce carbon emissions on site, to supporting local communities and creating opportunities through apprenticeships and workforce development programmes, these actions reflect our commitment to building lasting value beyond construction itself. Importantly, the report enables us to track that progress and hold ourselves accountable for continual improvement.

Another key theme that emerges from the report is the importance of relationships. Construction is fundamentally a people business. The strongest projects are built on trust, collaboration and shared objectives. We have been fortunate to work with a growing number of repeat clients across multiple sectors, and those long-standing relationships continue to play a vital role in our success.

Clients increasingly look for partners who can provide certainty, reliability and expertise from project inception through to completion. Building those relationships takes time, consistency and a commitment to delivering on promises. The annual report serves as a reminder of the partnerships we have developed and the confidence our clients place in us to deliver complex projects across the UK.

Equally important is the strength of our supply chain. No contractor succeeds alone. Behind every successful project is a network of suppliers, subcontractors and specialist partners working together to achieve a shared goal. Developing strong, dependable supply chain relationships has become increasingly important in recent years, particularly as the industry continues to navigate economic pressures, material availability challenges and evolving project requirements. By building long-term partnerships with trusted suppliers and subcontractors, we can maintain quality, deliver greater certainty for clients and create a more resilient business. Those relationships are every bit as important as the projects themselves.

Ultimately, an annual report is about perspective. It reminds us of how far we have come, the challenges we have overcome and the progress we have made as a business. At the same time, it helps define where we want to go next. While we are proud of what has been achieved over the past year, we remain ambitious. We will continue investing in our people, strengthening client relationships, improving our ESG performance, supporting our supply chain partners and delivering projects that create lasting value for clients and communities alike. The annual report captures an important moment in that journey. It reflects who we are today, but perhaps more importantly, it outlines the foundations for where we want to be tomorrow.
