ESG(Environment, Social and Governance) has become one of the most talked-about topics in construction. For some, it is viewed as a compliance exercise or a collection of targets that sit alongside the day-to-day demands of project delivery. At McCoy Contractors, however, ESG is not a separate initiative. Itis embedded into how we operate as a business, how we support our people and communities, and how we deliver projects for our clients.

Construction has a critical role to play in shaping the future of our built environment. That responsibility extends beyond the projects we deliver. It meansconsidering the impact we have on the environment, the opportunities we createfor our workforce and local communities, and the standards we uphold acrossevery aspect of our operations.

At McCoy,our approach is built around three key pillars: supporting people and communities, driving environmental progress, and maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance. These principles guide our decision-making at every level of the business and provide a framework for long-term, sustainable growth.

The social aspect of ESG is particularly important in an industry that depends on skilled, motivated and engaged people. We continue to invest in apprenticeships, training and professional development to ensure our workforce has the tools and opportunities to build rewarding careers. Alongside this, we support charitable organisations, community initiatives and wellbeing programmes that create apositive impact both within and beyond our business.

Equally, we recognise that construction must respond to the challenge of reducing it  senvironmental impact. The sector is under increasing pressure to lower carbon emissions and improve resource efficiency, and rightly so. While there is no single solution, progress is made through a combination of innovation, investment and a willingness to challenge traditional ways of working.

Across our projects, we are continually exploring new approaches that help reduce emissions while maintaining the quality and efficiency our clients expect. This includes investing in lower-carbon technologies, improving operational efficiency and embracing initiatives that deliver measurable environmental benefits. Our use of onsite concrete batching on major projects, for example, has helped reduce vehicle movements and associated carbon emissions, demonstrating how practical changes can make a meaningful difference.

The transition to a fully electric company car fleet is another example of our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and supporting the movetowards cleaner, more sustainable operations. These investments are not simply about meeting today's expectations; they are about ensuring we are building a resilient business for the future.

Safety, meanwhile, remains the foundation upon which everything else is built. No project can be considered successful unless it is delivered safely. Through rigorous procedures, continuous engagement and initiatives such as our"Take 5" campaign, we work to ensure that every member of our team returns home safely at the end of each day. Safety is not a box-ticking exercise. It is a core value that underpins every activity we undertake.

The significance of ESG is reflected in our latest Annual Report, which provides a detailed overview of the progress we have made over the past year. The report highlights not only strong business performance, with turnover reaching £32million and a workforce of 250 employees, but also the advances we have made across sustainability, social value and workforce development. It demonstrates that commercial success and responsible business practices are not mutually exclusive; they are increasingly interconnected.

As expectations continue to evolve across the construction sector, ESG will remain a key area of focus for clients, contractors, investors and communities alike. The businesses that thrive will be those that embrace this responsibility andview ESG not as a challenge, but as an opportunity to create lasting value.

At McCoy Contractors, that is exactly how we see it. By investing in our people, reducing our environmental impact and maintaining uncompromising standards of safety, we are building more than projects. We are helping to build a better future for our industry, our communities and the generations that follow.
